How we construct a capital protection mandate

Every Sterling & Sterling strategy engagement follows a structured methodology. The first stage is a comprehensive diagnostic: we map your existing assets, identify unhedged exposures, review the legal ownership structures in place, and benchmark your current allocation against your stated long-term objectives. From that diagnostic we produce a written Protection Blueprint — a document that describes the target state for your capital, the instruments that will be used to reach it, and the timeline over which changes will be made. This is not a generic model portfolio; it is a specific, named plan for your circumstances. The Blueprint is reviewed and updated at least twice per year, and any material change in your personal or financial situation triggers an immediate reassessment.

Our three strategy disciplines

Each discipline can be deployed independently or combined into an integrated protection mandate.

  • Portfolio Risk Containment

We apply quantitative stress-testing and scenario analysis to identify the specific conditions under which your current portfolio would experience significant drawdown. We then recommend structural adjustments — diversification, duration management, currency hedging, or alternative asset inclusion — to reduce that vulnerability without eliminating growth potential. Instruments are selected from regulated EU and Romanian markets.

  • Insurance Wrapper Structuring

EU-passported unit-linked and whole-of-life policies offer a legally robust way to hold investment assets within a protective envelope. We analyse available products from licensed insurers, structure the ownership and beneficiary designations to align with your succession intentions, and ensure the wrapper integrates cleanly with your wider portfolio and Romanian fiscal position.

  • Cross-Border Preservation

Clients with assets, residences, or heirs in multiple EU jurisdictions require preservation structures that function coherently across borders. We coordinate with legal and tax specialists in each relevant jurisdiction to ensure that your capital is protected by the right instruments in the right domiciles, with no conflicting legal claims or unintended fiscal events at transfer.

The Protection Blueprint: what you receive

The Protection Blueprint is a written, bound document — not a slide deck or a digital dashboard. It contains a plain-language description of your current asset position, a risk register identifying each category of exposure, a target allocation model with rationale, a shortlist of recommended instruments with due-diligence summaries, and an implementation timeline with named milestones. Clients consistently tell us that receiving a physical document in our charcoal and gold house style changes the relationship with their own wealth: it moves from abstract numbers on a screen to a structured, legible plan they can revisit and share with their legal and notarial advisers. We update the Blueprint after every six-monthly review and provide a tracked-changes version so that the evolution of your strategy is always visible.

“The Protection Blueprint they produced for us was the first document that made our cross-border asset situation genuinely clear. We had property in Romania, funds in Luxembourg, and a life policy in Austria — Sterling & Sterling mapped all of it into a single coherent strategy. The six-monthly reviews keep it current without overwhelming us with unnecessary activity.”

Strategy questions answered

How long does it take to build the initial Protection Blueprint?

For most clients, the diagnostic phase and initial Blueprint delivery takes six to eight weeks from the first engagement meeting. Complex cross-border situations or unusually diverse asset bases may require ten to twelve weeks. We provide a timeline estimate at the end of the first meeting.

Can you work with assets already held by another adviser or bank?

Yes. Many clients retain their existing custodian relationships and simply engage Sterling & Sterling for the advisory and structuring layer. We review what is already in place and recommend changes only where genuinely warranted, with clear written justification.

What asset classes do your strategies cover?

Our strategies cover listed equities, fixed income, real estate investment structures, investment-grade alternative assets, EU-passported insurance wrappers, and cash management instruments. We do not advise on speculative or unregulated products.
